What is Honey?
Honey is a naturally sweet, viscous and delicious food substance that is produced by honey bees using the nectar collected from flowers. There are many different types of honey, differing primarily by the major floral (nectar) source used to produce the honey.
What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka Honey is harvested by Apis mellifera Honey bees from the nectar of the Manuka tree (Leptospermum Scoparium) indigenous to New Zealand. Unlike most other honey type which can be collected throughout much of the year, Manuka Honey is a scarce resource as bees can only collect the nectar needed to make Manuka Honey for around 6 weeks of the year when the Manuka trees are in flower. Manuka Honey has a distinctive taste and colour which intensifies as the level of purity increases.
The nectar of the Manuka flower gives Manuka Honey its unique non-peroxide activity properties. The UMF™ (Unique Manuka Factor) rating number on every jar of Comvita represents the unique signature compounds characteristic of real Manuka Honey, which ensures purity and quality. These compounds include the key markers of Leptosperin, DHA and Methylglyoxal (MGO). Comvita offers Manuka Honey in UMF™ grades of 5+, 10+, 15+ and 20+ (each with increasing Methylglyoxal (MGO) content and level of scarcity due to crop yields).
