In honor of World Bee Day, we’re showing you how to make a difference and help the honeybees. Bees are essential to all life on the planet. More than one third of what we eat relies on bee pollination, but bees are currently threatened by pesticides, disease, and loss of habitat.

So you may be asking yourself, What can I do to make a difference to support the bees where I live? We’ve put together a helpful list of protective measures you can use to help them thrive.

Here’s how to create a bee-friendly garden of your own:

Plant large groups of wildflowers to attract bees.

Choose single flowers versus doubles or triples, choosing traditional flowers not highly modified flowers.
Choose organic, non-GMO, wild, pollution-free foods to plant.
Bees need plenty of pollen and nectar – so think about planting plants that provide both nectar and pollen.
Create an edible garden, plant berries, fruit trees and herbs. Some good examples are apples, pears, cucumbers and basil.
Avoid chemical pesticides, they harm the bees and other pollinating insects.
Provide fresh, pesticide-free drinking water for bees. If you fill a saucepan of water, put pebbles or twigs in the water for bees to rest on while they drink.
